“The root of the word courage is cor — the Latin word for heart. In one of its earliest forms, the word courage had a very different definition than it does today. Courage originally meant “To speak one’s mind by telling all one’s heart.” – Bene Brown
I have recently discovered Bene Brown and so much of what she says is absolute gold! Check out this clip that she did with Oprah. She mentions vulnerability towards the end. When we are living in a fear based state we cannot be creative because we shut down those parts of ourselves that bring in creativity! So many of us are living in fear. Not enjoying or living properly in each moment because there is SO much fear about what the future will bring. Fear keeps you STUCK, not growing within yourself, not changing, and always staying in the same place stuck in fear.
There is NO creativity without vulnerability.
Creating new, original art comes with vulnerability. Yet no one wants to be vulnerable. Being vulnerable is hard and it puts you in a position where you have to grow within yourself, change yourself, take risks, and be subjected to scrutiny. I realised that I have not wanted to post on here lately because it puts me a position of vulnerability and I don’t like feeling vulnerable. It’s hard, it’s uncomfortable, it’s lonely and it makes me question myself within all areas of my life. The magazine (although I love doing it) is my business but this blog is my heart. And as we all know it is ridiculously hard to share your heart with others.
So we now know that in order to be creative we have to get on board with vulnerability! And figure out how to coexist with being vulnerable. To be able to get to that place of absolute vulnerability where all of the magic happens we have to let go of all fear. Fear of whether people will still like you, fear of how much money you will make, fear of making mistakes and having to learn as you go. Everyone is filled with so much fear. People live there whole lives ruled by fear! I love this quote:
“It is impossible to live without failing at something, unless you live so cautiously that you might as well have not lived at all – in which case you fail by default” – J.K. Rowling
So here is the magic formula for creativity. Recognise fear based states, actions and behaviours. Do the hard work within yourself to constantly let them go. Recognise love and choose love within all actions. Learn to be ok with being vulnerable – it’s going to be hard and uncomfortable and feels awful because you are also choosing hard work and growth! With true vulnerability comes creativity. New art, writing, photos, content, creations, decisions, innovations, sharing and love for yourself and others.
