I have to confess I am yet to read the book #Girlboss by Sophia Amoruso (I may be the only woman left on earth yet to read it!) but I have heard great things about it. I recently listened to some talks/interviews with her and I thought I would highlight the key threads that I think may have lead to her overwhelming success at starting her e-commerce enterprise.
Here are five lessons we can learn from #Girlboss Sophia Amoruso:
Constant learning/self-improvement: Sophia had a propensity to learn things on her own and to keep on learning and searching for ways to teach herself whatever she needed to know. She googled, read business books and brought ‘ebay for dummies’ when she was starting her ebay shop. The fact that she did not know something did not ever stop her from continuing to grow and improve her business. Whatever she needed to learn to move forward in her business she went out and found the information.
She did not follow all of the ‘rules’: Sophia found creative ways to bend the rules. When she was running her ebay site she downloaded a special search add-in for myspace that enabled her to search for potential future customers using specific target customer data and eventually got kicked of ebay for advertising her future web site – which maybe a blessing in disguise as then she went on to launch her successful e-commerce site.
She was willing to do everything at first: When she was starting out in her business Sophia did everything to keep the company running – she sourced product, found models, styled it, shot photographs, wrote product descriptions, packaged product and marketed her shop. When you do everything yourself you learn very quickly all the key components needed to keep a business running.
Intense customer focus: She listened to her customer, had conversations with them everyday and had a very specific image and focus for her brand and knew exactly who the ‘nasty gal’ gal was. She was very customer driven and really understood her brand and her customer which enabled her to have a very high customer retention and resale rate.
Utilised social media: Sophia did not spend large amounts of money on marketing and advertising. Sophia primarily used social media to advertise and connect with her customer and she did a fantastic job at keeping them engaged and interested in her company.
