When you are in the beginning stages of starting a new business it can be completely all-consuming. It will be the last thing you think about when you go to sleep and the first thing you think about when you wake up. You will constantly be ‘on’ – having new ideas, thinking about all the things you want to do, and dealing with any roadblocks which may come up between you and your business goals. Your business will be a part of you and you a big part of it.
It is really important to continue to look after yourself and to do those all important tasks that help keep your life running. Here are some self-care tips for when you are really busy launching your business. These tips mainly apply to someone who is putting in the long hours at home.
Shower and get dressed every day! This seems basic doesn’t it? The amount of stories I have heard of entrepreneurs working hard at home in their pajamas day after day! Make sure you set aside a regular time each day for basic self-care. Don’t jump on your computer as soon as you get up!
Change your surroundings. Try and get out of the house once a day for some gentle exercise. Ideally do this in the morning to kick start your brain and boost your productivity for the rest of the day.
Continue to eat well. Make sure you are getting your vitamins and minerals. Have some fresh fruit available for healthy snacking at your computer or do some quick 5min snack prep each morning and cut up some veggies that you can just grab from the fridge when necessary.
Retain connections. Make sure you allow time each day to connect with your partner, children, friends and family. Keeping the connections alive and keeping your most important people in the loop will mean that they will in turn support you when you need it most.
Set a bedtime. Try and stick to a regular bedtime or make a final cut off point where you really need to turn off the computer and get to bed! If you can also allow for half an hour decompressing time with no technology before you hit the lights.
Don’t ditch the chores. Some household tasks can fall by the wayside but absolutely make sure every day you keep on top of the dishes and the washing. I think these are the two most important things to keep a house running! Delegate some vacuuming or other jobs to family members if at all possible.
Multi-task were possible! I am currently watching business videos while I cook and do all those other repetitive household jobs. Podcasts are also great to listen to while you are doing other things. Take any opportunity you can to learn and grow while you also keep the rest of your life running.
Take time out. Carve out some time each weekend to completely switch off from your business. Taking some time out to see a movie or laugh with friends will revitalise you to continue on and will keep the dreaded burnout at bay.
