If you want to awaken all of humanity, then awaken all of yourself, if you want to eliminate the suffering in the world, then eliminate all that is dark and negative in yourself. Truly the greatest gift you have to give is that of your own self-transformation.” – Lao Tzu
Imagine if kids were taught growing up that they could do anything that they want to if they could only develop the discipline and self-determination. Imagine if we were taught to look inward to solve our own problems instead of always looking outward. What a different world we would have. Imagine if kids were taught self-mastery growing up. Because once you master the art of looking after yourself – the sky is the limit! Humans are intrinsically motivated yet we are often brought up in learning environments that are extrinsic. It is so important that we learn who we are and what drives us and makes us happy. Millions of adults are struggling with depression and drugged up with antidepressants because they were taught to chase things outside of themselves for the external reward.
Here are four areas you will need to master for total self-mastery:
Body mastery: The first step to total self-mastery is body mastery. Looking after our own body is hard work and no one else can to it for us. It takes extreme discipline to exercise and eat well every day. Sometimes you don’t want to do it and there is pain involved. But this is your one and only body and you have to look after it. It is no one else’s responsibility but yours. You can’t be productive or provide value to others or even look after anyone else without your health. There is so much self-discipline involved with keeping yourself strong and in shape. Once you learn that I strongly believe that you can do anything!
Mind mastery: We all have a most beautiful and unique mind that we need to be constantly using. Figure out the things that make you happy internally. Try lots of different things, master different things. Write, draw, read, paint, and spend a lot of time thinking. Go visit amazing things, plan fun adventures, we live in such a diverse and amazing world. Keep your mind busy. Learn all of the time – not just from books but from everything. We are life long learners until we are no longer here on this earth. Make sure that you share your learning and your ideas! Become more self-aware. Master your thoughts and self-talk to keep it as positive as possible!
Relationship mastery: When we love ourselves and are connected to who we are we are better able to connect with everything and everyone around us. We are wired to reach out, touch, connect and make eye contact with others. Babies that don’t get these needs met die – that is how important these things are to us. Become comfortable with who you are. Love and accept yourself. When you love and accept yourself with all of your flaws it becomes easier to do the same with others. Share your love with others – smile and say hello to strangers that you pass. We live in a world that is starved of love and acceptance.
Environment mastery: I believe that our external environment is strongly correlated with our internal environment. Our external environment can work with us or against us. Where is your clutter? If you have clutter constantly piling up in one specific area it might mean that you have some internal work to do. Keep your environment clean and clutter free so that you can clearly see what you love and what is important to you. Make your space work for you! Develop the discipline in clearing up at the end of the day so that you can start fresh the following day. Keep all surfaces as clear as possible so that you have more space to create and get your important work done!
