The Ultimate Goal-Setting Method

The Ultimate Goal-Setting Method

There are probably 101 different methods to set goals! I am writing this with notes that I still have from one of my lectures while I was studying – the only notes I kept! And probably the best lecture I ever listened to. I have used this method a couple of times and found it quite useful to get your imagination going and to really get you out of your box in terms of really expanding your thinking and helping to get rid of any limited mindsets. I am also going to go through and do this goal-setting exercise this week and then I plan to do a progress update post at the end of the year.

I think it is important that we approach goal setting not out of lack. We are not living and taking action today for some future perfect day when we can really start living! We are whole and complete and perfect just as we are. However, we are happiest when we are developing and growing within ourselves. Goal setting helps us to create a big picture vision for our future so that we know what we should be working on today.

As always the path to true contentment is not our overall achievement of our goals it is about really enjoying the journey and the process WITHIN achieving our goals.

The ultimate goal-setting method uses only four areas, for many years I have done a spreadsheet at the start of each year which has 15 categories! (I usually set around 3-5 goals in each category for the year)

Here they are if you are interested:

Artistic/creative
Career
Community
Family
Financial
Fitness
Friends
Health
Fun
Learning/intellectual
Living environment
Personal relationship
Psychological
Recreation
Spiritual

It is really interesting to look back on your past goals each year so I really recommend transferring your goals into a spreadsheet if you do this on paper so that you can save it.

The Ultimate Goal Setting Method: (Time 1hr/15m each category)

The Goal-setting Mindset = Committed + Focused

For each of the four categories imagine that you have:

-unlimited finance
-unlimited opportunity
-unlimited time

What would you want to achieve or have over the next 12 months, 3 years, and 10 years?

1. Personal Development:

– Answer the above question and write down everything that you would like to improve in your life that relates to personal growth. e.g. learning, spiritual, relationships, health, etc.
– Review your list and timeline each improvement. Remember goals are dreams with a DEADLINE!
– Choose your single most important one-year goal in this category and write a paragraph about why you MUST absolutely achieve this goal this year.

2. Financial/Business:

– Answer the above question and write down everything that you would like to improve in your business/financially.
– Review your list and timeline each improvement.
– Choose your single most important one-year goal in this category and write a paragraph about why you MUST absolutely achieve this goal this year.

3. Toys/Adventure:

– Answer the above question and write down everything that you could ever want, have, do or experience in your life.
– Review your list and timeline each of your requirements.
– Choose your single most important one-year goal in this category and write a paragraph about why you MUST absolutely achieve this goal this year.

4. Contribution/Service to others:

– This is your opportunity to leave your mark or create a legacy that significantly influences others. Answer the above question and ask yourself – how could you contribute?
– Take a minute to review your list and timeline each of your contributions.
– Choose your single most important one-year goal in this category and write a paragraph about why you MUST absolutely achieve this goal this year.

ACTION is the most important first step in achieving any goal.

If you do this exercise please leave a comment with the FIRST action step that you will take towards achieving your goals!!
